Dennis Drazin

In the Haskell, Sunny Ridge, a New Jersey hombred for attorney Dennis Drazin, outfinished Kentucky Derby (gr. I) hero Nyquist for third. “He ran a super race-very impressive to run third in the Haskell against a really top field,” said Drazin, who was particularly impressed by the fact Sunny Ridge didn’t have a pre-Haskell prep. The gelding is now pointing to the September 24 Pennsylvania Derby (gr. II) at Parx.
A well-known face on the Garden State Thoroughbred scene, Drazin was thrilled to have his first Haskell runner. He said, “Although I’ve won a lot of races here in New Jersey and throughout different places in the country, this was the first Haskell horse I had, and it was kind of a thrilling day.” An attorney based out of Red Bank, Drazin is best known to local horsemen as a longtime member of, and consultant for the New Jersey Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association. Drazin also served as chairman of the New Jersey Racing Commission; currently, he is an advisor to Darby Development, LLC, which runs Monmouth for the NJTHA.
“I think I’m a lucky man,” Drazin mused. “I have two loves aside from my family-I have a law practice that I love, and I love doing the racerack work. A lot of people ask me which comes first, and I guess my first love is practicing law and my second love is the racetrack, and then I have a close family, so certainly family is an important part of my background. It’s all interrelated. But I think without any one component I wouldn’t be as happy as I am.”

VIP Experience – New Blog!

SUMMER SALES MADNESS
There are several ways one can describe the atmosphere at the Fasig-Tipton Select yearling sale in Saratoga Springs. Having had the pleasure of attending over the past 14 years or so, I have just one- Electric. Whether you are working as press or media, buying, selling or simply spectating, it is hard not to get caught up in the excitement of the annual event. The sale can be a spectator’s dream given the presence of many of the biggest names in the game, including Hall of Famers D. Wayne Lukas, Bob Baffert and Steve Asmussen; in addition to top trainers Todd Pletcher and Chad Brown, etc. Not to mention a bevy of leading owners, farm operators, horsemen and women, many of whom may not be as readily apparent to the casual fan, however, they play as integral a role in the racing game as any of the aforementioned luminaries.
For those uninitiated who have yet to attend and might be considering visiting next season, one word of advice: attend the Tuesday session (Day 2 of the sale), if you can. Monday’s initial session is absolutely mobbed. Given the fact that Saratoga races six days a week, including Mondays, it makes it far too easy for people to walk (or sometimes stagger) across the street to the sale’s grounds. Tuesday’s session is typically a little more relaxed and you may just make it close enough to the bar to actually buy yourself a drink, a salient point for most on a non-racing day.

Stifling the Pain
How to get athletic horses with injuries to the large, complex stifle joint on the road to recovery
The stifle. It’s the largest and one of the most complex joints in the horse’s body. It’s also key to smooth locomotion, transferring energy seamlessly from the large hind-end muscles to the long, delicate lower-limb bones. The stifle helps propel horses across turf, over obstacles, and around tight corners. Not surprisingly, with such huge forces centered on two bones cushioned by two small cartilaginous discs, injury to the stifle generally has a profound negative impact on performance.
“Stifle injuries account for a substantial number of injuries in sport horses,” says David Frisbie, DVM, PhD, Dipl. ACVS, ACVSMR, professor of equine surgery at Colorado State University’s (CSU) Equine Orthopaedic Research Center, in Fort Collins. Although the exact prevalence of stifle injuries remains unknown, Frisbie estimates that approximately 40% of sport horse injuries can be associated with the stifle.
