Josephine Abercrombie

Josephine Abercrombie’s Pin Oak Stud, located in Versailles, Ky., reigned supreme at the sales in recent months. On August 9, Mandy Pope of Whisper Hill Farm scooped up a sale-topping $1.45 million yearling, bred by Pin Oak and consigned by Denali Stud, at Fasig-Tipton Saratoga. The Medaglia d’Oro filly, out of stakes-winning Pin Oak homebred Whisper to Me (by Thunder Gulch), hails from one of Abercrombie’s most fruitful female families.

Currently, Pin Oak stands three stallions, including two homebreds: Broken Vow, who sired a $1.2 million colt at OBS April this past spring.
Of Broken Vow, Abercrombie enthused, “He’s a wonderful horse. He’s my favorite. I just love him. And he’s very good-looking. Every time I walk in the barn, he looks at me and wants me to bring him sugar.” Barry concurred, saying that the son of Unbridled “gets you some very sound offspring.”

But, as a true horsewoman, Abercrombie’s focus always remains on the animal itself. An entire section of her farm is devoted to caring for retired broodmares and other horses. “They get to live out their life in pretty good style here,” Barry said. “We just try to take good care of them.”

VIP Experience

By Christina Bossinakis  – TOBA Owner Concierge Services Director

It was hard to imagine that the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association would be able to surpass the splendor of last year’s annual TOBA Awards host site, John Sikura’s Hill ‘n Dale Farm. However, drawing another ace again this season, TOBA offered guests a tremendous renewal Sept. 10 at Stonestreet Farm, Barbara Banke’s sparkling Lexington property. Offering a comfortable and spacious dining venue and amenities, spectacular vistas, and tasty fare, this year’s ceremonies didn’t miss a beat. Frankly, pictures don’t do it justice.

The evening’s festivities had been preceded earlier in the day by a luncheon presented by TOBA to the state winning breeders of the 2015 season. Acting as host of this event for the first time, I really enjoyed the luncheon. Giving state winners the opportunity to offer a few words in accepting their awards, it underscored the importance of the honor, rewarding many operations that might be dwarfed in size and scope by many, yet they harbor as much love, passion and commitment to the game as anyone who funds an operation 10 times the breadth. It was truly heartwarming. Every breeder in that room has likely tasted the ‘thrill of victory and the agony of defeat’ and though the scale may change, the sentiments behind it invariably don’t. The whole event offers a wonderful perspective on the industry and I was proud to be invited to be part of it.

STEREOTYPIES –
Vice or Coping Mechanism?

Cribbing, windsucking, weaving, stall-walking. These are all examples of equine stereotypies. Not to be confused with stereotypes-preconceived ideas about certain groups of individuals-stereotypies are any kind of repetitive behavior that appears to have no purpose. In horses, the most common stereotypies are oral (cribbing and windsucking) and locomotor (weaving and stall-walking).

To help you better understand what these behaviors are (and aren’t), what causes them, and what to do about them, we’ve gone to those who study them. We’ll also look at recent research on  stereotypies and how they affect equine health and welfare.
