In the past decade, Jay Em Ess Stable has flaunted many a feather in its cap. But its latest star might boast the brightest plumage of all. On October 4, Jay Em Ess Stable, spearheaded by Samantha Siegel, produced its first homebred grade I winner when two-year-old filly By the Moon captured the Frizette Stakes at Belmont Park.

Of By the Moon’s 2 -length victory under Jose Ortiz, Siegel enthused, “It’s a big, big thrill. Winning the races is fun, but the bigger the race, the bigger the thrill.” She added, “To have raised a grade I winner is extra special.” The Frizette has “Win and You’re In” status, meaning By the Moon has an automatic spot in the starting gate for the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I). Second in the Spinaway Stakes (gr. I) at Saratoga, By the Moon will ship cross-country for trainer Michelle Nevin for the Juvenile Fillies, which will take place at Santa Anita Park on November 1. Read more.

High Praise for Inaugural Thoroughbred Owner Conference

Approximately 300 people, including 120 current owners and 100 new or prospective owners, attended the inaugural Thoroughbred Owner Conference. The event was hosted by OwnerView (a joint venture between TOBA and The Jockey Club) on October 13-16 in Lexington, Ky., and the event drew widespread praise from both participants and sponsors.

The conference was sponsored jointly by the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, the Keeneland Association, the New York Racing Association Inc., and the Stronach Group. Tom Durkin, the recently retired NYRA track announcer, served as master of ceremonies for the conference.

“This conference successfully presented the excitement and professionalism of Thoroughbred racing to existing and prospective owners in a way that’s never been done before,” Keeneland President and CEO Bill Thomason said. “There were a number of unique aspects – a high level of participation by industry leaders set in a unique environment and capped by an afternoon of live racing – that enhanced the experience for all its participants.” Read more.
