MEMBER OF THE MONTH
Alina Muther- Copper Penny Stables
On September 13, one outstanding yearling colt shone like a copper penny for his breeder Alina Muther’s Copper Penny Stables. Consigned to the recent Keeneland September sale by Gerry Dilger’s Dromoland Farm, the dark bay son of Orb, Tally Ho Dixie, by Dixieland Band brought $1 million from the team of Eric Fein and Kerri Radcliffe.
This million-dollar moment was bittersweet for Muther, a resident of New Hope, Pennsylvania, and her small operation. “That moment that he brought that price, I wanted to put my head down and cry, and not in a good way,” she recalled. Just last year, Brookdale Sales consigned the weanling colt to last year’s Keeneland November sale, where he went under the hammer for $175,000 to Trabu Purchases.
The Michigan native added, “While I was happy of course, happy for the people, hopefully someone will come back and buy one of my weanlings and yearlings in the future. It’s a little tough. It is a little tough to leave that kind of money on the table.” The extra funds would have gone to good use; Muther said, “It gives you money to go out and be able to purchase better broodmares.”
Despite the fact she did not pinhook the Orb colt herself, Muther is thrilled for his new team. “Being a good sport about it, I wish the new connections all the luck in the world with him,” she said, adding hopefully, “You never know. Maybe this Orb will do really well.”

RMTC TO AUCTION OFF HALTERS FOR TACTICAL RESEARCH GRANTS
Between November 24 and December 1, the Racing Medication and Testing Consortium (RMTC), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, will auction off halters of famous racing and stallion stars on its
eBay page.
All proceeds from the auction will go toward the RMTC’s four-year grant program beginning in 2018 to encourage tactical research into the detection and identification of illicit substances. The RMTC is pursuing contributions from other industry groups and individuals to match funds provided by the RMTC. The funding level has not been finalized but is expected to be at least $500,000.
“This program will provide researchers a consistent funding source for critical tactical research projects,” said RMTC Executive Director Dr. Dionne Benson. “This initiative will enable us to make significant advances in targeting emerging threats and developing new techniques to test for them – both of which are essential to effectively regulating our sport.”

EIA: What’s the Big Deal?
Find out where veterinarians are seeing an uptick in equine infectious anemia cases
By Nancy S. Loving, DVM
Each year, like clockwork, our veterinarians take blood samples from our horses during spring health exams. We sign the forms, and off the tubes go to the lab for the Coggins test. We do this year in and year out, with no positives and no questions asked. So why do we keep up with this annual horse care ritual?
The Coggins test checks for antibodies against the equine infectious anemia virus (EIAV). This virus is significant because much like the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), its lentiviral cousin, there is no vaccine and no cure. A horse diagnosed positive for equine infectious anemia (EIA) dies, is euthanized, or gets placed under extremely strict quarantine conditions (at least 200 yards away from other equids) for the rest of his life.
