2016 has been an award-worthy year for owner-breeder Jerome “Jerry” Amerman and her husband, John. This year, they bred two full siblings, Oscar Nominated and Oscar Performance (Kitten’s Joy – Devine Actress, by Theatrical), both of whom have captured graded stakes. “It’s wonderful to have two good ones,” Jerry said.

Racing in Jerry’s name, homebred Oscar Performance captured the October 1 Pilgrim Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Belmont ans secured the November 4 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (gr. IT) at Santa Anita. “I obviously am very pleased, but we have to give credit where credit is due-his mama and his daddy and his trainer,” Jerry commented. She enlists the help of bloodstock agent Headley Bell to recommend sires for her broodmares. “But Headley looks at it from a pedigree perspective and I look at what the stallion did as a racehorse, what he’s throwing,” she said.

The Amermans own about 11 mares, boarded at Mill Ridge Farm in Lexington, Ky., owned by Bell’s mother, Alice Chandler, and her husband, Dr. John Chandler. Currently, Devine Actress is not in foal, but will probably visit Claiborne Farm’s Flatter in 2017. But you probably won’t see her foals in a sale anytime soon. “If I keep my ‘children,’ so to speak,” Jerry said, “I can be sure of what’s going to happen to them. And that’s the most important thing to me.” She added, “I like to be sure that, if they can’t race, they’re going somewhere where they’ll be cared for.”

But the welfare of her horses is most important to Jerry, who boards some rehabbing and retired horses at her Peacefield Farm in Temecula, California. Jerry has served on the board for the Center for Equine Health at the University of California, Davis, and John has been worked with multiple equine organizations, including TOBA, where he served on the American Graded Stakes Committee for seven years. Last year, John and Jerry joined WHOA (the Water Hay Oats Alliance) to support federal regulation of medication in horse racing.

Jerry noted, “I just kind of feel like, if you’ve got a horse that you brought into the world because you planned it
[the mating], you’ve got an obligation to take care of it, no matter what happens to it. You try to find a good home, and that’s why I think that Thoroughbred aftercare is important for me.” In particular, the tragic passing of Amerman-owned grade I winner Siphonic in 2002 “changed my whole outlook on racing,” she said. “Get them back safe, that’s all I worry about. Winning is nice; being safe is better.”

BREEDERS’ CUP CAPS OFF A FUN-FILLED WEEK

This year, Halloween kicked off a week for the ages. It started off with the third annual Owners Conference, hosted by Ownerview in conjunction with TOBA and sponsored by Stronach Group, Keeneland and Breeders’ Cup. Conducted over three days at Santa Anita Park, the conference brought together a strong and enthusiastic gathering of panelists, moderators and registrants. Held for the first time in tandem with the Breeders’ Cup, the conference offered several panels which meshed nicely with Breeders’ Cup history and lore.

Key among them was the conference’s panel involving former Breeders’ Cup-winning owners, including Stonestreet’s Barbara Banke, Billy Koch of Little Red Feather, Dean Reeves, John Amerman and Ken Kinakin. It was fun, informative and inspirational and offered a great goal for attendees to aspire to. Additional panels over the course of three days included a panel on business considerations, the always popular jockey’s assembly, and a discussion between influential trainers and veterinarians. I was privileged to moderate a panel on equine aftercare, and left thoroughly impressed by the strong assembly in that particular group. Representing the various aftercare groups were Erin Crady (TCA), Kristin Leshney (TIP), Lucinda Mandella (CARMA), Michael Blowen (Old Friends) and Stacie Clark Rogers (TAA). Truthfully, I was left thinking if I was going to start a company, I would want several of these individuals on my board! A very inspiring discussion, indeed.

Another interesting feature this year was the ‘Races in Hollywood’ forum, emceed by Nick Clooney (yes, father of “Gorgeous George”).  The presentation included a look at several racing-related movies, including Secretariat and Seabiscuit. It was quite a novel concept.

Among my favorite moments was the appearance of owner (not to mention a supreme gentleman) Everett Dobson of Cheyenne Racing. He offered a well thought and inspiring welcome back to attendees on the conference’s final day. I am proud to say he is a regular user of the Owners Concierge, and he is a man I respect not only for his business acumen and success, but also for class, grace and enthusiasm. Everett definitely walks the walk.

Not to be left out was the Keynote speech delivered by Eddie Olczyk. Not only a tremendous athlete in his day, Eddie has been an avid racing fan for over almost three decades and shared some poignant and personal racing experiences. In fact, his recollection of Diana O, a horse he campaigned over 20 years ago and whom he named after his wife was sentimental, riveting and quite the tear jerker. A man of supreme class, Eddie shared his highs and lows in the game but his enthusiasm and appreciation for the game was truly inspiring.

GOT HEALTHY HOOVES? –
Here’s How to Keep Them That Way

Consider the big picture, from farrier care and diet to environment and genetics –
By Heather Smith Thomas

Barefoot? Sound? What can I do to keep them this way? Are there special products I should be using or certain ways I should be managing them? What if he needs shoes?

These are just a few of the many questions horse owners ask about their horses’ feet. They’ve heard about or have managed less-ideal feet, so it’s only natural to want to keep things going the way they are and stave off problems. We gathered advice from two farriers on how to have the healthiest of hooves, with or without shoes.
