Janis and Clay Whitham

Janis Whitham and her son, Clay, have unleashed the Mc”Craken” on the Kentucky Derby Presented By Yum! Brands (Gr. I) trail. On February 11, their undefeated homebred
McCraken registered an impressive victory in the Sam F. Davis Stakes (Gr. III) at
Tampa Bay Downs. In the process, the favored McCraken (Ghostzapper-Ivory Empress, by Seeking the Gold) set a new track record, covering the 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.45.

Until now, the Whithams’ best runners have primarily been older horses, but 2016 marked a change. In addition to McCraken, they own
Linda, a four-year-old filly who captured the Mrs. Revere (Gr. II) at Churchill Downs last year. But Whitham family triumphs have come across the country, including Grade I victories on both coasts from two-time Breeders’ Cup Distaff (Gr. I) winner, multiple champion, and Hall of Famer Bayakoa. “1989 was when Bayakoa won her first Breeders’ Cup Distaff in Florida,” Whitham recalled. “That was a lot of fun. It was just unbelievable. She was just a winning machine, just winning Grade Is.”

The famously parrot-mouthed mare didn’t reproduce herself as a broodmare, but her daughters more than made up for that. In the early 2000s, her granddaughter Affluent, an Affirmed mare out of Bayakoa’s daughter Trinity Place, captured four grade I races for the Whithams. A decade later, Whitham homebred
Fort Larned  (a son of Bayakoa’s daughter Arlucea) won the 2012 Breeders’ Cup Classic (Gr. I) and Whitney Handicap (Gr. I), as well as the 2013 Stephen Foster Handicap (Gr. I). The Whithams’ hometown of Leoti, Kansas, even celebrated “Fort Larned Day” in 2012.

Mother and son frequently collaborate on the operation. “It makes it that much more rewarding,” Whitham said. “It is a family activity for us, and my parents were involved in owning horses their whole lives.” One pivotal purchase came at the 1983 Keeneland November mixed sale, when Frank Whitham brought home a weanling Nodouble filly for $75,000. He would name her Tuesday Evening, and she became the eventual third dam of McCraken. “This family and that mare really played an essential part in our horse ownership program,” Whitham said.

Avid promoters of organizations to improve the game-“we are supporters of TOBA and try to support anything we can in the industry”-Whitham is excited about what 2017 will bring. Hopefully, the whole family will be at Churchill Downs on the first Saturday in May, as he observed, “It’s a lot of fun to share the excitement of going and enjoying races with those people that are interested in that.”

Pedigree & Conformation Clinic Recap

Richard Migliore discussing breezing horses in the Winner’s Circle

February 28th at Gulfstream Park was the date and locale for TOBA’s first seminar of 2017. We were treated to phenomenal weather, views and company during a day spent in the President’s Suite and backside.

A full group of varying experience levels, but shared passion, discussed pre-purchasing two-year-olds with Dr. Jeff Berk, stable management as an owner with Anna Seitz, heard from trainer’s Michelle Nihei and Ron Moquett and much more.

Additionally, we were brought behind the scenes of the sale with Fasig-Tipton’s announcer, Reed Ringler. However, the collective favorite was meeting Richard “The Mig” Migliore down at the Winner’s Circle to watch horses train and hear of his experiences.

Lastly, we had the chance to apply what we learned in the barn. We visited the DeMeric and RiceHorse consignments and all made fantasy syndicates amongst ourselves for the horses we had the chance to inspect. The next day  the gray we picked out by Exchange Rate brought $550,000  from John Ferguson. Our hopes may have been dashed buy it was a reward for our new knowledge and a step in the right direction towards ownership!

Equine Disease Report

The Animal Health Trust fights disease and injury in animals. Find out more about our work at
www.aht.org.uk.

Equine Herpes Virus-1 (EHV-1) Neurological Disease

A case of EHV-1 neurological disease was confirmed in a horse at a small stable in Ingham County, Michigan. The affected animal which only displayed mild neurological signs, is recovering. All other horses on the premises are under restrictions until further notice. There have been no recent movements onto the premises, dispensing the need for follow-up tracing investigations.

Strangles

Another outbreak of strangles has been confirmed in Florida, this time in Colombia County. The index case was recently purchased from a Louisiana based facility known to have been associated with previous cases of the disease that have been reported in Florida in 2017. The latest case is the first in Columbia County this year and the tenth in the state.

A case of strangles has been confirmed in Hardee County, Florida. The horse which had been imported from North Dakota in late December or early January, had a slight nasal discharge upon arrival. Its condition worsened and a diagnosis of strangles was confirmed earlier this week. No horses had left the facility once the clinical condition of the index case worsened. This is the first case of the disease in Hardee County and the eleventh in Florida in 2017.

Trump Administration to Rollback Clean Water Act Rule

In 2015, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) issued a new regulation to redefine “Waters of the U.S.” under the Clean Water Act (CWA). The Trump administration has announced it will instruct the EPA and the Corps to review and reconsider the 2015 rule known as the Waters of the United States rule or WOTUS. The rule was opposed by the American Horse Council (AHC) and other agricultural groups.
The CWA regulates discharges of pollutants into navigable rivers and lakes, collectively known as “Waters of the U.S.” The 2015 rule redefined “Waters of the U.S.,” in a manner that significantly expanded the waters subject to the requirements of the CWA. The CWA includes exemptions for agriculture, however, the AHC and other agricultural groups had serious concerns regarding the 2015 rule and the AHC believed it could negatively impact horse farms, ranches and racetracks in all parts of the country.

During the original comment period, the AHC asked the EPA and Corps to withdraw the rule in its entirety and supported Congressional efforts to block the rule. The AHC supports the decision to review and reconsider the 2015 rule.

If you have any questions please contact the AHC at horsecouncil.org.

Researchers Assess Stifle Abnormalities in Young Thoroughbreds
By Alexandra Beckstett

Thoroughbreds intended for sale or racing are under great radiographic (X ray) scrutiny. “A horse sold as weanling, yearling, and 2-year-old in training would likely be radiographed at least four times,” in his first two years, said Elizabeth Santschi, DVM, Dipl. ACVS, professor of equine surgery at Kansas State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, in Manhattan.

This wealth of images has provided researchers with the ability to track radiographic abnormalities (RAs) and their progress in this population of horses. One common finding is abnormalities of the stifle’s medial femoral condyle (MFC).

Many Stifle Abnormalities Improve from Weanling to Yearling Years
By Maureen Gallatin

In a similar study, Deborah L. Spike-Pierce, DVM, of Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky, and colleagues recently determined that many radiographic stifle abnormalities identified in Thoroughbred sales weanlings resolve by the time those horses return to the auction ring as yearlings.

Spike-Pierce and colleagues evaluated 1,444 stifle radiographs from 722 Thoroughbred weanlings for osteochondrosis (OC)/osteochondrosis dissecans (OCD) in the stifle’s femoropatellar joint and for changes in the MFC. They examined the same horses’ radiographs when they returned to the sale as yearlings.
