Charles Fipke
Charles Fipke with trainer Dallas Stewart and FOREVER UNBRIDLED after winning the Apple Blossom H. (G1)

Charles Fipke spreads his talents equally between discovering gems and polishing off Thoroughbred diamonds in the rough. The original Mr. Prospector, Fipke helped discover the Ekati diamond mine twenty-five years ago. Although the geologist has since sold his remaining interest in Ekati, Fipke has maintained a sparkling record in horse racing. Take his homebred Forever Unbridled. In the April 15 Apple Blossom Handicap (gr. I), a $600,000 contest at Oaklawn, this beautifully bred filly notched her first grade I victory, coasting home 2 ¼ lengths clear of second-place finisher Streamline.

Kentucky-bred Forever Unbridled (Unbridled’s Song – Lemons Forever, by Lemon Drop Kid), trained under the keen eye of Dallas Stewart, is a testament to Fipke’s eye for quality Thoroughbreds. The four-year-old bay entered the Apple Blossom off back-to-back graded stakes scores. First, she eked out a head victory in last fall’s November 28 Comely (gr. III) at Aqueduct. Forever Unbridled then kicked off 2016 by traveling to Sam Houston Race Park, where she posted a 1 ¾-length win in the January 30 Houston Ladies’ Classic (gr. III). After the Apple Blossom-her third consecutive win at three different tracks-Forever Unbridled now boasts a record of four firsts from ten starts and earnings of $911,600.

Thoroughbred Industry Employee Awards Launched In USA

Godolphin announced the launch of the Thoroughbred Industry Employee Awards (TIEA), in partnership with the National HBPA, Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA) and The Jockey Club.

The awards are open to anyone working in horseracing and breeding across the USA in order to recognize and reward the dedicated, hard-working people who are the backbone of the industry and play an invaluable role in caring for our equine athletes.

The TIEA ceremony will be held on opening day of Keeneland’s fall meet, October 7, with recognition given to a total of 13 individuals in five different categories.

Stars out at 16 Preakness as rain dashes Triple Crown dreams
By Christina Bossinakis

Black-Eyed Susan Friday dawned as glorious a day as could have been ordered by the Chamber of Commerce, however, an amazing transformation took place over the course of the next 24 hours.

As predicted, Preakness day proved to be a dreary, rainy and cold stage for the second jewel in racing’s Triple Crown, however, the fans still came out in droves at the prospect of Nyquist attempting to get one step closer to taking down the Triple Crown, a feat recorded by American Pharoah one year earlier.

Even with the foul weather, the Preakness day crowd was robust, and the day rounded out with yet another record, over 135,000 in the house. In addition to many of racing’s notables, Preakness day also brought out several stars. Spotted in the crowd (or in the marquee boxes and tents situated throughout Pimlico) were celebrity chef and horse owner Bobby Flay; Olivia Culpo, actress and former Miss USA; 50 Cent (he certainly needs no introduction); and actor Josh Charles (The Good Wife, etc.). I even managed to find myself behind Cal Ripkin Jr., who just made the cut in getting passage out of the infield and across the racetrack to the grandstand side after the Preakness. Some of us were not as fortunate. I guess being a star baseball player in Baltimore has its perks.

TCA Announces May Award of Merit Winners

Thoroughbred Charities of America has announced the Award of Merit recipients honored at state breeders associations’ awards ceremonies in May.

Award of Merit recipients consist of individuals or organizations working to provide a better life for Thoroughbreds or the people working with them, either on the backstretch or on the farm.  Both achievements are reflective of TCA’s all encompassing mission to help Thoroughbreds and the people who care for them. Subsequent award of merit winners will be announced monthly.

Rockin’ G Equine Sanctuary was honored at the Thoroughbred Racing Association of Oklahoma’s Awards Banquet on May 20 and J. Willard Thompson was named the recipient by the Thoroughbred Breeders Association of New Jersey on May 21.

News

Our first Ownership Seminar was held May 5th to a sold out crowd in Churchill Downs’ brand new Director’s Room. We had 25 new owners from the recently filled Churchill Downs Racing Club among others in town for the Derby and interested in becoming more involved in the sport.

The seminar began promptly at 8am and filled the entire morning and early afternoon with discussion about welcoming new owners, resources for new owners and breeders, on and off track relationships, licensing, tax tips, insurance, bloodstock and acquisition, sales, claiming, trainer dynamics, legalities and retirement.
We even had trainer Dale Romans stop by to share some stories before he won the first race! Despite the questionable weather and record ‘Thurby’ crowd, we had a great day filled with information and racing.

Congrats Corner

9 Vaccines You Never Knew Existed

As an owner doing all within your power to keep your horse healthy, you’re likely familiar with what the American Association of Equine Practitioners calls the “core” vaccines that every horse should receive: tetanus, rabies, West Nile virus, and Eastern/Western equine encephalomyelitis (EEE/WEE). And you’re probably pretty well-versed in common risk-based vaccines, such as equine herpes virus and influenza. But what about some of the more obscure risk-based vaccines out there?
The risk for any particular disease in your specific area, along with your personal preferences, will determine which vaccines you might decide to administer to your horse. A vaccine that one owner considers a no-brainer might not even be on the radar of another. Only you can determine which pros and cons weigh more heavily in your particular situation.
Here we’ll look at nine vaccines that, depending on your location and other factors, you might want to discuss pursuing with your veterinarian. Some (botulism, pigeon fever, rattlesnake, and strangles) have been around for a while; one – (leptospirosis) – was just release in October 2015; and others are in development or experimental stages (Lyme disease, melanoma, porcine zona pellucida, and autologous sarcoid vaccines).
