Member of the Month

Robert Luttrell

Bob and Myrna Luttrell

The Eight Belles Stakes (gr. III), run at Churchill Downs, honors the filly of the same name who finished second in the 2008 Kentucky Derby (gr. I), only to break down after the race. Her legacy lives on in Robert Luttrell’s homebred Promise Me Silver, who delivered gold to take the seven-furlong contest on May 1. The sophomore filly came home in a speedy 1:22.90, posting a one-and-a-quarter length victory over Las Virgenes (gr. I) winner Callback in the process.

Luttrell, an Arlington, Tex. resident, is astonished by Promise Me Silver’s success. “It’s been amazing. She’s brought me much more fame than I ever expected. I’m not accustomed to seeing my name in the paper,” he marveled. Promise Me Silver was undefeated as a juvenile, capturing stakes races from Churchill Downs to Fair Grounds. Her most recent race, the June 6 Acorn Stakes (gr. I) at Belmont Park, marked her only loss to date. Thus far in her career, she has garnered $435,915 from eight wins in nine starts; this year alone, the Texas-bred has won four stakes races, including the Eight Belles. Read more.

A Message to Racing Fans

From RMTC Chair Alex Waldrop

Dear Racing Fans,
On behalf of the Racing Medication and Testing Consortium and our board members, I sincerely thank each of you who supported the RMTC with a contribution in 2014. Your support helped sustain the RMTC’s important efforts to ensure the integrity of racing as well as the health and safety of racehorses and participants.

In the last year, the RMTC further demonstrated its commitment to both education and advocacy initiatives – particularly through our efforts to establish the National Uniform Medication Program, which encompasses a Controlled Therapeutic Substances list, third party veterinarian administration of furosemide, a multiple medication violator (“MMV”) penalty system, and our laboratory accreditation / external quality assurance program (the “Reforms”).

To date, the Reforms that our board recommended have been approved in their entirety in at least 10 states and are under consideration in many others.
