Olive and Brendan Gallagher

With four consecutive graded stakes wins this year, Monomoy Girl has catapulted herself to the top of the 3-year-old filly standings. Bred in Kentucky by Michael Hernon’s Highfield Ranch and Brendan and Olive Gallagher’s Frankfort Park Stud, the Tapizar filly, undefeated in 2018, is a burgeoning superstar.

Irish natives, the Gallaghers both grew up with fathers in the horse industry. County Kildare native Olive is the daughter of equine royalty; her father was legendary jump jockey Pat Taaffee, who rode the immortal Arkle in the 1960s. Brendan got involved in American bloodstock in the 1980s, saying, “Well, I came here in 1983 as a student for a year because I did a lot of the shipping.” The farm originally served as a location to quarantine imported stock before shipping them elsewhere.

US-BRED Magazine 2017

Along with the Kentucky Thoroughbred Association, TOBA published US-Bred 2017, a review highlighting Thoroughbred racing, breeding and sales in the United States. For generations, American Thoroughbred breeding and racing has produced phenomenal, world-class racing and racehorses.  This annual review provides the background to 2017 winners of the Triple Crown and Breeders’ Cup winners, the Pegasus World Cup, American turf fixtures, two-year-old racing, leading training centers, summer racing at Saratoga and Del Mar, leading yearling/2-year-old/breeding stock sales review, changes to U.S. tax law including accelerated depreciation and expense write-offs, and breeding.  We are distributing US-Bred 2017 to domestic and international owners to encourage greater interest in American racing and racehorse ownership and complement ongoing and new efforts to generate more Thoroughbred ownership.

We would also like to thank our generous sponsors, including Ashford Stud, Churchill Downs, Claiborne Farm, Darley, Fasig-Tipton, Juddmonte, Keeneland, New York Racing Association, Stonestreet, The Jockey Club, The Stronach Group and Three Chimneys, as well as the professional and first staff at the BloodHorse, who designed and produced US-Bred 2017

A complimentary copy of this special commemorative magazine was mailed in mid-July to every TOBA member and we hope that you enjoy the wonderful stories and photos of American racing and breeding in 2017.
