Joe Appelbaum

Off the Hook, LLC, is a geographically diverse effort. For example, the pinhooking team of businessman Joe Appelbaum and conditioner Carlos Morales bred recent graded stakes winner Faypien in Florida. On July 17, that three-year-old filly captured the Summertime Oaks (G2) at Santa Anita Park. Said Appelbaum, “The game started as, ‘My horse is better than your horse; let’s prove it,’ so to have your opinion vindicated is always nice.”

Faypien, a daughter of Ghostzapper, was consigned to the 2016 Ocala Breeders’ April Sale, where she fetched $720,000 from her current owners, Baoma Corporation. The two-year-old filly made quite the impression at that sale, covering a quarter-mile in :20 2/5. Also winner of the May 14 Angels Flight Stakes at Santa Anita, Faypien has never finished off the board in four starts.

Appelbaum acquired Faypien’s dam, the New York-bred Freud mare Mighty Eros, from consignors Sequel Bloodstock for $55,000 at the 2006 OBS February Sale. The day he purchased her, he’d sold a horse earlier that day; Appelbaum wanted to use those proceeds to buy a New York-bred two-year-old, who turned out to be Mighty Eros. He said, “
Mighty Eros took a little while to get to the track, but about a year later she broke her maiden at Belmont” by 11 ¼ lengths.

Next time out, Mighty Eros captured the New York Stallion Park Avenue Stakes, and Appelbaum was excited because “
she was looking like an extremely good three-year-old filly prospect.” Unfortunately, a stall accident later that summer hampered her further development, so Applebaum decided to breed
her.
Appelbaum was a fan of Ghostzapper on the track.
“Ab
out four years ago, we were in the nadir of Ghostzapper’s popularity or unpopularity,” he recalled, so he sent
Mighty Eros
to the 2004 Horse of the Year to produce
Faypien.

Strangles
The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Affairs has placed a premises in Pinellas County under quarantine restrictions following confirmation of a case of strangles based on clinical signs and a positive diagnostic test result. The index case was observed ill June 30. There are an additional four horses on the premises, as yet clinically unaffected.  This is the first case of the disease in the county and the twenty-fifth in the state in 2017.

A horse in Island County, Washington State, has been diagnosed with strangles.  It had recently been moved from a training facility in Southern California.  The affected animal presented with an enlarged, abscessed cervical lymph gland.  Another horse that had travelled with the index case is currently under investigation.  The horse owner has been instructed about the need for observance of appropriate biosecurity precautions on the affected premises.

American Horse Council News
(Washington, DC)- The American Horse Council Foundation (AHCF) is pleased to announce that the survey link for the update of the economic impact study is now available! Individuals will be able to share this survey with others involved in the industry, as well as post the link on social media to encourage others to take the survey.

“We were advised to do the rollout of the survey link in two phases,” said AHC President Julie Broadway. “The first phase included AHC member organizations and their affiliations which served as our initial sample frame.  The survey link needed to be sent to a known population size so we can accurately judge the response rate.  For example, if we send the survey link to 500 people and 100 reply, we know that the response rate is 20%, and the results must be increased to characterize the full population according to statistical survey methodology.”

“Phase two will consist of an open link that will be sent out via social media, press releases, email blasts, etc. This invites anyone that wants to complete a survey the ability to do so using the social networks of our member organizations to increase participation in a ‘snowball’ effect,” continued Ms. Broadway. “The questions are exactly the same as in the phase one survey link, but the URL for each survey link is slightly different so The Innovation Group can distinguish these responses from the control group. We certainly want as many people as possible to complete the survey, it just needed to be done in phases so the statisticians and economists can interpret the data correctly.”

Getting a Second Wind

Are breathing issues slowing your horse down?
Here are some surgical and management options that might help

By TRACY GANTZ

It matters not how sound of foot and mind your barrel racer, show jumper, or trail horse is. If oxygen can’t pass through his nostrils and flow down his airways unimpeded, he’s not going to be able to turn those barrels, clear those fences, or handle a long-distance ride.

While some breathing problems are temporary and can be corrected easily with the proper medication regimen, others might cause lifelong breathing difficulties and compromise the horse’s athleticism to the point that he can no longer perform.

The good news is that management techniques and/or surgery can mitigate some of these problems, even at the highest competitive levels. For example, a Thoroughbred racehorse named Bolo, that ran in the 2015 Kentucky Derby, underwent surgery for a breathing problem last year. After seven months of recovery, he returned to win the $200,000 Arcadia Stakes at Santa Anita, in Arcadia, California, in February 2017.
