Member of the Month
Peter Callahan

Whether in partnerships or solo, Peter J. Callahan has a finger in every equine pot. Most recently, three-year-old colt Collected (whom he co-bred with historic Runnymede Farm of Paris, Kentucky) made a splash on this year’s Derby trail. The speedy chestnut took the January 9 Sham Stakes (gr. III) in his first start on dirt, wired the field in the rich March 20 Sunland Park Festival of Racing Stakes, and coasted home first by four lengths in the April 16 Lexington (gr. III) before finishing tenth in the May 21 Preakness (gr. I).

Yeah, you’re damn right we were excited,” Callahan recalled of Collected’s Triple Crown promise. He added, “Just to be mentioned in that company was flattering, to say the very least.” Consigned by Runnymede, Collected fetched $150,000 at the 2014 Keeneland September Yearling Sale from SGV Thoroughbreds, which sold him the following spring for $170,000 at Ocala to eventual owners Speedway Stable. Thus far, the Bob Baffert trainee, graded-placed at two, boasts four wins in a seven-start career and earnings of $433,700.

The member of the month (solely or in partnership) bred or owned the following:
AGNES DIGITAL, AWESOME GEM, BEAUTICIAN, BEVO, COLLECTED, FISTFITE, SCOUTUS.

By Christina Bossinakis  – Owner Concierge Services Director

I always enjoy Belmont since it is vast yet quite accessible. And the day’s card couldn’t have been any better-10 stakes and nine of them stakes-offering some of the best racing one hopes to see. So many good races to talk about, so little time. However, I will say, two of the most impressive races of the afternoon were courtesy of Kiaran McLaughlin horses; Cavorting and Frosted. Campaigned by Barbara Banke’s Stonestreet Stables, Cavorting defeated a deep bench, including Grade I winners Forever Unbridled, Curalina, Sheer Drama and Stopchargingmaria. Even more impressive in victory, or at least I thought, was Frosted’s score in the Met Mile. All I can say is ‘Wow’. I have had the pleasure of seeing the Godolphin rep numerous times over the past couple of seasons, during my stints in New York and Florida, and I have to say, my mouth was left agape. I have never seen him offer that type of push-button acceleration. I’ve always been a fan of his, but that performance propelled him into another level. Great job by the McLaughlin team and I really look forward to seeing him at Saratoga this summer. Another horse that really impressed me was the world-traveler Flintshire. Now in the barn of Chad Brown, the Juddmonte runner has won everywhere from France to Hong Kong and once again showed his talent and supreme class in Saturday’s Manhattan. A final thought on Flintshire: I think it is poetic that Chad is finally handling this caliber of horse for Juddmonte, an operation that enjoyed tremendous success under the direction of the late Hall of Famer Bobby Frankel, Chad’s former mentor. It seems to represent a full-circle moment.

The moments leading up to the Belmont were exciting, made even more so by the menacing look of the skies. Thankfully, the thunder gods held off until after the race, much to the chagrin of Exaggerators connections, I’m sure. Creator’s owners-WinStar Farm and recent buy-in Bobby Flay-were absolutely drowned in the winner’s circle, while struggling to fit about two dozen people under five umbrellas. However, it didn’t appear they minded it very much. I suppose winning a Classic can do that.

And as the clouds finally moved out and the sun broke through, a picture-perfect rainbow enveloped the racetrack. Most fittingly, THE GREAT Creator saved the most transcendent performance of the day for last.

The Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA) announced the launch of a new www.tobamain.kinsta.cloud, a website that has been re-designed to deliver a more personal and informative experience to owners and breeders and fans with greater information and functionality across all digital devices.

“Digital and social media with real time interaction is very important to us reaching the entire Thoroughbred industry and the enhanced content on our new website will allow us to provide more information and serve our membership more effectively,” said Aly Strainer, TOBA Director of Marketing & Membership.  “The new TOBA website provides centralized information on past and upcoming graded stakes races and will generate more interaction with our members and anyone interested in getting involved with owning Thoroughbreds.”

Osteochondrosis: Harmless Lesion or Permanent Problem?

“Growth itself contains the germ of happiness,” writes Pulitzer Prize novelist Pearl Buck. Perhaps it does.

But in young horses, it might also include something a bit less appealing-chips of bone.  Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) is a common disease of domesticated horses characterized by loose cartilage and/or bone fragments in the joints. Fortunately, there’s a “germ of happiness” in the prognosis: Many OCD lesions heal spontaneously within a few months. Those that don’t, however, can cause permanent problems when not treated correctly.

How the condition manifests varies considerably from horse to horse, joint to joint, and lesion to lesion. And researchers say its severity and occurrence rates might be linked to breed, genetics, and environment. To give you a better understanding of this complex growth issue, we’ve put together the most recent work and viewpoints from the world’s leading researchers on this disease.
