On November 5, Michael Cavey and Nancy Temple had a reason to pop some bubbly. At 33-1, Champagne Room, bred in the name of their Respite Farm in Paris, Ky. stamped herself as the probable champion two-year-old filly with a three-quarter-length victory in the 14 Hands Winery Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I) at Santa Anita.

Consigned by Denali Stud as a weanling, Champagne Room was sold for $70,000 to Summerfield Sales at the 2014 Keeneland November sale. After she RNA’d at Keeneland September the following year, Ciaglia bought Champagne Room as a juvenile, consigned by De Meric Sales, for $310,000 at OBS April this past spring.

In 1987, Cavey and Temple bought Champagne Room’s fourth dam, Erzulie Freda, bred by Tartan Farms of Ocala, Fla.

Their broodmare band numbers about four to five horses, including Lucky to Be Me and a filly from the family of champion and leading sire Uncle Mo, whom Cavey bred. At Fasig Tipton November in 2010, Cavey sold his dam, Playa Maya (in foal to Broken Vow), for $1.65 million to Coolmore’s M.V. Magnier. “After Uncle Mo, we thought we’d done it, so we dispersed the majority of our horses,” he said. “Oddly enough, now that Champagne Room has done so well, she’s probably going to keep us in the horse business for a few more years.”

2016 Seminar & Clinic Recap

TOBA hosted eight ownership seminars, pedigree/conformation and breeding clinics during 2016 at five different locations throughout the country. Over 100 people attended the events which focused on the racing industry as a whole, business aspects, physical makeup of the horse and veterinary topics. We also were able to partake in social events such as the Saratoga Select Sale, the Indiana Derby, and much more.
“TOBA is an excellent resource for not only educational /news purposes but also in making new friends and contacts in the Thoroughbred industry!” – Mary K. Reynolds, Indiana Grand Ownership Seminar attendee

“I learned a lot! It was worth every penny, including the travel expenses, and then some.” – Gulfstream Park Ownership Seminar attendee

“Although I have been an owner/breeder for 12 years now, this is the first TOBA program I have attended. I highly recommend the TOBA Breeding Seminar to members and non-members of any experience level. With direct exposure to world class breeders, trainers, yearling managers, veterinarians, and feed companies, this is a program you don’t want to miss. I am looking forward to attending a conformation and pedigree seminar next.” – Stephen Wigmore, Lexington, Ky. Weekend Breeding Clinic attendee

CROWNING DAY TO START GULFSTREAM CHAMPIONS MEET
Gulfstream Park’s Champions meet kicked off in what has become the customary meet-launching Claiming Crown, presented by the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association and the National Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association.

The day begun with the presentation of a most informative ownership clinic–hosted by TOBA–and it offered participants with a wide array of accomplished guest speakers (including yours truly) offering their knowledge and valuable insight into racehorse ownership. I personally enjoy presenting at these engagements because I appreciate getting an idea as to what some of the game’s newcomers might be thinking as they embark on journey that often becomes a lifelong passion.

Following the morning’s enlightened discussions, which also included issues relating to starting young horses, equine law, tax and aftercare, and partnerships, clinic participants were treated to a day at the races in Gulfstream’s newly refurbished Presidential Suite, situated on the third floor, within Christine Lee’s Restaurant.

The Claiming Crown card itself was chock full of action and it appeared that every region and racing demographic was essentially covered. Connections converged from all over the East Coast, including New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Florida and Kentuc
ky.

2017 Racing Trips

September 3-11, 2017: Ireland

An early fall trip highlighting the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown, one of the most important weight-for-age races of the year in Europe. Included will be a multiple-Group 1 raceday at The Curragh, the one-of-a-kind beach racing at Laytown, and action at two other Irish courses. We’ll have a farm visit or two, a morning of training out on The Curragh, and some special optional sightseeing.
October 13-22, 2017: England
Featuring British Champions Day at Ascot, which in its short history has become a vital part of the end-of-the-year title picture in Europe. Five Group 1 events lead the card. We’ll also cast a wide net over the English racing scene with days at Goodwood, Windsor, Bath, and Brighton, and leave time for non-racing exploration of the latter three places. We’ll top things off with a visit to the “Valley of the Racehorse” in Lambourn, and a Thames River cruise.

December 3-11, 2017: Hong Kong
The biggest racing day of the year in Asia — the Hong Kong Jockey Club’s International Race meet at Sha Tin– is the main attraction on our first visit to this fascinating city. We’ll have an evening at the legendary Happy Valley course, see some morning training, and offer a variety of activities on land and water as we survey one of the planet’s truly unique places.
Please note some of these dates may be altered very slightly, but will be settled in the next month.

Breeding the Older Mare

As a mare’s fertility wanes, there are still steps-some simple, some cutting-edge-breeders can take to obtain a foal

By Maureen Blaney Flietner

She’s the kind of mare every breeder loves to have on the farm: well-built and attractive with great movement, excellent ground manners, and the uncanny ability to always produce stunning foals. And she’s a great mama, to boot. Problem is, she isn’t getting any younger, and so her fertility isn’t what it used to be. Fortunately, good management practices and veterinary advancements can help. And for that exceptional senior mare, avant-garde services add to your reproductive options.

The Latest Discoveries in Equine Reproduction

Reproduction-focused vets convened to discuss the latest in equine breeding, including mare fertility issues, antibioticresistant bacteria, and biomarkers of disease

By Alexandra Beckstett

Making baby horses is big business for some. Breeders’ livelihoods depend on having fertile and disease-free broodmares and stallions produce strong foals that flourish. To that end, many researchers and veterinarians make it their lives’ work to keep this subset of the equine population as healthy and fruitful as possible. Each year, a group of these reproduction-focused veterinarians-theriogenologists-convene at the Theriogenology Conference to discuss their latest findings. This year’s edition took place in Asheville, North Carolina, in July, and we’ve summarized the hottest equine topics for you here.
