Member of the Month

John C. Oxley

Sons of Pulpit are all the rage these days-just ask Tapit. Another red-hot Pulpit stallion is John C. Oxley’s Hopeful Stakes (gr. I) winner Sky Mesa, currently 23rd on the leading sires list. Oxley, a Tulsa, Okla. resident, continues to prosper with Sky Mesa’s progeny. He bred two-year-old filly Ol’ Fashion Gal, who won the Jimmy Durante Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Del Mar on November 29 for owners Bill and Vicki Poston. Oxley sold a yearling Ol’ Fashioned Gal for $60,000 at the 2013 Keeneland September sale. Read more.

2015 Graded and Listed Stakes

The American Graded Stakes Committee of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association presented its listing of U.S. Graded and Listed Stakes Races for 2015, the results of its annual grading session conducted December 3 in Lexington.

The Committee reviewed 750 unrestricted U.S. stakes races with a purse of at least $75,000, and assigned Graded status to 463 of them, eight more than were graded in 2014, and Listed status to 171 races. No Graded races were upgraded; eight new Grade III races were named; 15 new Listed races were upgraded from Non-Listed Black Type status. Twenty-four races which carried Listed status in 2014 are no longer eligible for grading. Read more.

Catholic Cowboy Gives Zito

Second Claiming Crown Jewel

Nick Zito is best known to Gulfstream Park fans as a trainer of Kentucky Derby winners, but the Hall of Fame trainer was the King of the Claimers on December 6 for the second year in a row.

Zito saddled Catholic Cowboy for a 17-1 upset victory in the $200,000 Jewel, the grand finale of Saturday’s eight-stakes $1 million Claiming Crown on Opening Day of the 2014-2015 Championship Meet. Last year, the Brooklyn native visited the winner’s circle with Nevada Kid after his victory in the Jewel, a 1 1/8-mile stakes for horses that started for a claiming price of $35,000 or less since Jan. 1, 2013.

“What I need to do is try to win another Kentucky Derby,” said Zito, who trained Kentucky Derby winners Strike the Gold (1991) and Go for Gin (1994). “But at the end of the day, if this is what the Good Lord wants, and I can win these things every year, it’s not so bad.”

Thoroughbred Ownership Seminar

December 6 Recap

Kathy Ritvo discusses the morning workouts.

Gulfstream Park was a popular place to be on December 6 for three reasons: Championship Meet opening day, Claiming Crown and the TOBA Thoroughbred Ownership Seminar. Twenty-five prospective and current owners arrived at the track early that morning to expand their knowledge of the many components of ownership. Topics covered included the owner/trainer dynamic, racehorse acquisition, business topics, Thoroughbred retirement, resources for owners and preparing for the races. Read more.

Three-Year Tax Depreciation for Racehorses Passes Congress

A provision that retroactively extends three-year tax depreciation for all racehorses was passed by the United States Senate late today as part of bill H.R. 5771, the Tax Increase Prevention Act of 2014. The bill, which extends retroactively through the end of 2014 numerous provisions which expired or were reduced at the end of 2013, passed the House of Representatives with overwhelming support on December 3 and is expected to pass into law with President Obama’s approval.

Maintaining the three-year recovery period for racehorse purchases has been a top legislative priority for the National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) since the provision’s initial enactment as part of the 2009 Farm Bill. Read more.
