Member of the Month
Robert Masterson
Photo courtesy of the Blood Horse – Anne Eberhardt Keogh
Robert E. Masterson has a way with the ladies.
Though he has owned graded stakes-winning mares before, none compare to Tepin, whom he called an “once-in-a-lifetime kind of horse.” After her June 14 win in the Queen Anne Stakes (Eng-I) at Royal Ascot, the 5-year-old daughter of Bernstein is flying higher than ever. The Mark Casse trainee became the first American-based winner of the historic Queen Anne.
Masterson fell in love with Thoroughbred racing at a young age.
“Well, I originally got involved in racing with my dad taking me to Belmont when I was a child,” he said. “Then I went to school at the University of Maryland, so all the fraternity brothers used to go over to Laurel all the time.”
Even when he ran First Data Resources in Omaha, Neb., the defunct Ak-Sar-Ben racetrack was right across the street from his office, and Masterson hasn’t been able to resist racing’s lure since.
A generous Masterson is quick to credit the members of Team Tepin, both human and equine, a
nd, of Tepin, Masterson said: “She’s very consistent, but you now we’re very blessed this year, I think.”

VIP Experience – New Blog!
By Christina Bossinakis – TOBA Owner Concierge Services Director
Saratoga Dreamin’
It’s the time of year when the East Coast’s horse racing fans, bettors and horsemen and women head to visit their version of Disney World-Saratoga Racecourse in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Every so often someone, who hasn’t already had the pleasure of attending, will ask me what Saratoga is like. My initial reaction is almost always the same; a broad smile and a chuckle. How might one describe Shangri-La if they were asked? Magical? Mystical? Heavenly? I’m sure if you ask 20 different people their sentiments on Saratoga’s summer racing meet, they might come up with an assortment of adjectives that all paint a somewhat different albeit similarly rosy picture. Typically, I will offer something like, ‘Saratoga is racing’s playground’. In addition to top notch racing and sales, Saratoga offers an abundance of parties, plentiful dining options, a slamming nightlife (I have to admit, the best of those days might be best observed in MY rearview mirror, sadly). There is even some culture if the theatre and ballet is your thing. And of course, we can’t forget the springs themselves, which have helped give the city ‘The Spa’ its commonly-used nickname. Hello, Valhalla.
I arrived in Saratoga last week and made my usual appearance on the Saratoga backstretch. Truthfully, attending morning workouts is probably my favorite part of the whole Saratoga experience. The peace, serenity (although it can get quite active when the season is in high gear), and let us not forget the star gazing. All one has to do is start at the backstretch’s coffee stand (the standard meeting place for anyone looking for a friend) and head up the stretch to the Oklahoma track gate entrance, and you are sure to bump into a couple of racing’s stars. On one of these walks, I crashed a jockey’s congregation (I must admit, they did seem quite pleased to have somebody new they could fan their tails in front of). The group included Hall of Famer Angel Cordero Jr. (a true character not to mention a wonderful story teller), Johnny Velazquez and Julien Leparoux. Also along the way, I encountered a bevy of trainers, including Todd Pletcher, Bill Mott, Tom Albertrani and Barclay Tagg–the list goes on and on. And the key is you will catch them in a much more relaxed setting as opposed to their game-day mode you will likely encounter in the afternoons.

Understanding Equine Insurance Policies
What would you do if your riding horse colicked, seriously injured himself, or, worse, had to be euthanized? You’d not only be devastated emotionally but also saddled with a stack of veterinary bills. Talk about adding insult to injury.
This is where equine insurance policies come in to help cover these costs. But when choosing a plan for your horse, where do you start?
Types of insurance available to horse owners include mortality (similar to a life insurance policy), major medical, loss of use, and liability (to protect you legally if your horse hurts someone). Some liability policies also protect you from a lawsuit if someone gets hurt on your property.
Check out your August 2016 issue of The Horse (a TOBA member benefit) to read more from this article.
