Ben Berger – Woodstock Farm
With his last-to-first February 15 triumph in the Southwest Stakes (gr. III), at Oaklawn Park, Suddenbreakingnews has made himself a bona fide Triple Crown contender and another standout for his breeders, Branch Equine, operated by Robert Berger and his son, Ben.
Catch a Glimpse, also thrived at Woodstock. Ben said that she “was a nice filly, had good angles, and was put together right.” Her stakes-winning dam, Halo River, was 18 when Catch a Glimpse was foaled and had already produced grade III winner (and 2015 champion sire in Canada) Old Forester, but she’d had some bad luck since then. Fast forward to 2014, when Catch a Glimpse went under the hammer for $75,000 to eventual co-owner Windways Farm.
Catch a Glimpse’s successes have been a thrill for the Bergers. “I’d raised her and we’d prepped her to sell her and she’d made it to the Breeders’ Cup and she’d won,” recalled Ben. “That was just kind of those once-in-a-lifetime things-hopefully not once-in-a-lifetime, just a perfect storm of things that was happening.”

VIP Experience at Tampa Bay Derby Recap
Winning Connections of DESTIN – Tampa Bay Derby(G2) Victor
This year’s Tampa Bay Derby day offered a little something for everyone. Whether you were a fan, participant, bettor or member of the media, Tampa’s March 12 card proved to be a crowd pleaser. Robert Masterson’s champion mare Tepin continued her dominance with a crowd-rousing win in the G2 Hillsborough Stakes, capping off a four-race win streak, including last season’s G1 Breeders’ Cup Mile. Tepin’s dramatic victory set the stage for the day’s marquee event, the G2 Tampa Bay Derby and it was Twin Creeks Racing Stables’ Destin, who punched his ticket to this year’s Triple Crown with a professional score over fellow Todd Pletcher trainee Outwork, campaigned by Repole Stable.
At the end of a wonderful day of racing, it was easy to see why Derby day is considered one of the most entertaining and hospitable events to attend. The TOBA Owner’s Concierge VIP suite located adjacent to the winner’s circle resembles a throwback to the hospitality of yester-year, and was very well received by the day’s stakes participants. With the ever gracious Stella Thayer, owner of Tampa Bay Downs, and her wonderfully affable husband Bronson, presiding over the winner’s suite, the day’s winners (and a few runner ups) took advantage of the day’s hospitality, served up Tampa style.
For a first-time visitor or veteran, Tampa Bay Downs Derby Day gets two thumbs up, and should be added to everyone’s to-do list next year!

ARCI to Host Town Meeting on April 7 at Keeneland
The Association of Racing Commissioners International (ARCI) is hosting a meeting at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 7 in the Keeneland Room at Keeneland Racecourse. The meeting is open to the public.
TOBA encourages you to attend, as we are working in conjunction with the ARCI as they host a series of “Town Hall” meetings and focus groups around the country to explore possible solutions to problems facing the industry and its participants that impact on the integrity of our sport. Owners, trainers, breeders, veterinarians, track officials, regulators and fans are welcome to provide input.
Without an industry consensus on what problems must be addressed and how to do that, we will miss opportunities to strengthen our sport. It is important that our voices be heard in this process. If you’d like to attend this meeting:
Sign up here.
The ARCI is seeking local and regional input to better guide discussions taking place nationally. TOBA believes it is important that our members participate and share your thoughts.

Award of Merit to John Evans
Thoroughbred Charities of America has named John Evans as its first TCA Award of Merit recipient of 2016. Award recipients are nominated by the leadership of various state Thoroughbred owners and breeders associations and are presented at each state association’s annual awards ceremonies.
“Last year, in celebration of our 25th anniversary, we named nearly 20 Award of Merit recipients,” said Dan Rosenberg, president of TCA. “The response to the award was tremendous so our board decided to continue it again this year. There are so many people working tirelessly on behalf of Thoroughbreds and those who care for them in our industry and we feel it is important to acknowledge their efforts. We are deeply appreciative of John’s work at Second Chance Farm and are thrilled that he is our first award recipient of the year.”
Evans was nominated for his work as farm manager at the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation’s Second Chance Farm at the Lowell Correctional Institute in Ocala, Florida. TRF’s Second Chances Program allows inmates to participate in an equine vocational training program while providing supervised care to retired racehorses. Now in its 16th year, over 120 inmates have participated in the program at Lowell Correctional Institute.

Claiming Crown at Gulfstream Park through 2018
Gulfstream Park, the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA) and National Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association (HBPA) announced today the $1.1 million Claiming Crown will continue to be held at Gulfstream through 2018.
This December will mark the fifth consecutive year that the Claiming Crown will be held at Gulfstream Park. It will also mark the 18th consecutive year of the event. The inaugural Claiming Crown was held in suburban Minneapolis at Canterbury Park in 1999. The Claiming Crown had also been held previously at Parx, Fair Grounds and Ellis Park. The event was started to reward the blue-collar horses that provide the backbone of day-to-day racing programs.
Total handle for the Claiming Crown the past two seasons at Gulfstream has topped $10 million.
Said Dan Metzger, President of TOBA: “The Claiming Crown has enjoyed unparalleled success since moving to Gulfstream Park and we are thrilled to be able to continue to host the event there for the next three years. Over the last four years, the Claiming Crown has been elevated to a more prominent status on the racing calendar and this agreement solidifies our remarkable partnership with both Gulfstream Park and the Florida HBPA.”
