Sheer Drama, owned and bred by Harold Queen |
Harold “Hal” Queen reigns supreme when it comes to Drama – or, at least, horses bearing that name. The latest star from his top broodmare Riveting Drama – who also foaled Queen’s 2010 Eclipse champion sprinter and Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Sprint (gr. I) winner Big Drama (by Montbrook) – took home her first grade I victory in the 1 ¼-mile Delaware Handicap on July 18. Florida-bred Sheer Drama, trained by David Fawkes, most recently won the Personal Ensign Stakes (gr. I) at Saratoga on August 29, qualifying her for the October 30 Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Keeneland.

Recap in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
|
Tom McGreevy evaluates conformation of sales yearlings with
Mark Taylor during the Pedigree & Conformation Clinic.
|
Saratoga Springs, N.Y. is always buzzing in August, especially for TOBA. We held two educational events in Saratoga, splitting our time between the Saratoga Race Course and Fasig-Tipton sales grounds.
The Pedigree & Conformation Clinic included discussions on pedigree theories and planning matings, a conformation lecture and conformation evaluations of both sales yearlings and horses in training.
The Thoroughbred Ownership Seminar included discussions on the owner/trainer dynamic, the jockey and jockey’s agent, acquiring racehorses, business topics for owners, shoeing the racehorse, conformation and appraisal of racehorses, and a private tour of the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. Both clinics included an afternoon of live racing at the Saratoga Race Course.
TOBA also held our annual members meeting earlier this month in Saratoga. This was a good opportunity for members to become more informed about TOBA’s work in the Thoroughbred industry.

Microchips to Become Requirement for Registration Starting with Foals of 2017
The Jockey Club’s Board of Stewards voted to change certain provisions of the
Principal Rules and Requirements of the American Stud Book and, as a result, microchips will become a requirement for registration for foals of 2017 and later. The microchips will be used in conjunction with official markings to provide an effective means of confirming the identity of Thoroughbreds for the duration of their lives.
