PUCA NAMED 2025 BROODMARE OF THE YEAR
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association announced today that Puca has been named as the 2025 Broodmare of the Year and will be honored at the TOBA National Awards Dinner on Thursday, September 10 at The Kentucky Castle in Versailles, Ky.
The Broodmare of the Year is recognized in all North American sales catalogues.
Puca is the dam of 2025 Pennsylvania Derby (gr. I) winner Baeza, as well as 2023 Kentucky Derby (gr. I) winner Mage and 2024 Belmont Stakes (gr. I) winner Dornoch. She is only the ninth broodmare in history to produce a pair of American Triple Crown race winners. The 14-year-old mare by Big Brown was bred on a foal share by Jerry Crawford and Big Brown’s late co-owner Paul Pompa Jr., and was raced by Donegal Racing. She finished second in the Gazelle Stakes (gr. II) and retired with four wins and earnings of nearly $300,000.
Grandview Equine purchased Puca for $475,000, carrying her first foal, by Gun Runner, at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky fall selected mixed sale. Puca was bred to Good Magic in back-to-back years, delivering a pair of colts at Runnymede Farm in Paris, Ky. Her first Good Magic colt was named Mage. After finishing second to champion Forte in the Florida Derby (gr. I) in just his third career start, Mage then won Kentucky Derby, was third in the Preakness (gr. I), and finished second in the Haskell Stakes (gr. I). He earned just over $2.5 million in his seven-race career.
Dornoch, the second Good Magic Colt, won the 2023 Remsen Stakes (gr. II), then went on to win the Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. II), before capturing the 2024 Belmont Stakes and Haskell Stakes. Dornoch earned over $2.4 million in his career with five victories in 10 starts.
Baeza, purchased for $1.2 million at the 2023 Keeneland September yearling sale has become one of the top older horses in the country. In 2026, Baeza ran third in the Alysheba Stakes (gr. II), second in the Stephen Foster Stakes (gr. I) and has earned nearly $2.2 million in his career.
Puca was sold in 2023 for $2.9 million to Resolute Racing and returned to the sales ring at Fasig-Tipton’s 2025 November Sale, where she brought the hammer down for $5 million to
Racing Torrent Syndicate. Now residing at Ace Stud in Newmarket, England, Puca was bred in 2026 to Spendthrift Farm’s multiple leading sire Into Mischief.
